About the event
My name is Stephen Foy-Philp and I am currently the Artist in residence at Ashford School. My work, which tends to cross the boundary between painting and installation, revolves around a central crocodile character who encounters different situations and undergoes various transformations. I am interested in playing with space when I put on a show and often hang paintings in unconventional ways using found objects and other made elements to pull the pictures out of the picture plane. For instance, one of the pictures is usually installed with the crocodile's favourite mug sat in front of it, still with the dregs of coffee inside. There is a picture of Crocodile Dundee on the mug.
While I work on a painting I find myself entertaining questions of style and paint application with a discovering which leaves me in the dark as to how the finished piece will look. This way of working can be a little bit tricky but when it pays off it can be very exciting. It almost feels like the pictures emerge by themselves and I'm just here to let them happen.
I have shown my work at the Sidney Cooper gallery in Canterbury, Untitled BCN in Barcelona and the Turner Contemporary in Margate. My most recent show was on during the Folkestone Triennial at the Brewery Tap project space. The upcoming show at the Coachworks will be a brilliant next step in this journey and I am really looking forward to the opening.
